Well, today was the day that we were supposed to leave Venice via London to portland.
This morning, S woke up looking like a new person but Z was still feeling quite dizzy, distressed and dehydrated. We made the decision that they were too weak to take the flight as Z couldn’t even sit up without feeling dizzy. So we decided to book an Airbnb on the mainland as it felt safer and easier to be somewhere there are cars, delivery services, and easier access to medical services if needed. Z cried when I told him leaving did involve a walk and a water taxi then taxi ride but both boys managed to do really well. S was able to manage his luggage most of the time which allowed me to hold Z with one hand and haul luggage with another while we all alternated also carrying his luggage.
We are now here, settled in a 4 bedroom apartment in Mestre. It’s a little smoky but otherwise quite nice, has 2 bathrooms and a washer (very important!), is 5 minute walk from grocery store and 5 min walk to bus that takes us into Venice should we all be well enough to go.
We will be here for a few days before London then portland.

Neena and I ordered a big Indian takeout thanksgiving dinner and the kids later joined us to eat some fruit (which is a big improvement for both).
I’m grateful for my cousin today, my health, the kids’ health and resilience, and that I get to travel and have adventures even if there are moments of stress.
The kids have turned a corner and I’m really hoping we have at least one day where everyone is well enough to enjoy Venice together—let’s see.
