Last full day in Florence

The day began with a nice restful night’s sleep and I’ve planned our trip to that approximately every other day, we don’t have anything to run to early in the morning.

Which means the kids get an hour of screen time with breakfast I cooked and I get an hour of running time, much needed to balance out the gelato and pasta.

Well what a treat today as the city was awake in excitement and it was the city marathon! I even got to run with the marathoners for about half a mile. Been there, done that, no thank you—I don’t ever need to run 26.2 again! And later in the day, the boys got to cheer on the runners too. What a treat, though it made for some busy streets.

We then went to the Xmas market in Santa Croce square, which was so fun. We bought lots of little gifts for ourselves and others. My favorite? Fleece lined warm wool beanies for all of us for 14 euro each and a couple of gorgeous and unique jewelry sets. We went back and forth to our apartment as it was laundry and pre-packing day.

Then to Mercato centrale as I wanted to check out the food stalls (I was underwhelmed), back home for a brief stop then over to the Duomo. Poor S has been having stomach troubles today on and off but he was a trooper and climbed the 457 steps up the Duomo and it was a great view! We thought about doing the bell tower too but I didn’t want to push it. I thought a rest at home before dinner would be best.

We had an early but long 2 hour again at our favorite restaurant, Bistrot 74, getting many of the things we did yesterday but also trying the bruschetta and spaghetti with pomodoro sauce. OMG I’ve never tasted more tasty spaghetti with tomato sauce in my life! We had a great meal there!

Now time for bed. The last hour of the day seems to be the hardest for us. We are all tired, especially the kids, it seems, and S seems to have travelers diarrhea (sad as we never got it in weeks of asia travel last year) and both boys are just bouncing off each other and everywhere, not listening, and hard to direct to get ready for bed. It’s definitely my worst and most frustrating hour too. Otherwise most of the day is pretty good, but that last hour is very hard.

I’ll leave you with some photos of our meal tonight and tomorrow we head to Venice. I hope S is better by tomorrow as that’s the place he was looking forward to the most.
