First cooking class with Basil cookery

So… sleep still isn’t happening…except for S, who is sleeping quite well over in his own room alone. Z didn’t wake fully until close to 4am today but did toss and turn and kick mr much of the night, which made for very fragmented sleep. We are now going on about 6-7 days of poor sleep for me, except for one night in there. I’m feeling it. I told Z it’s time to move over to his own cot in my bedroom, which was the original plan. Mom needs to be able to function.

That’s my bed and Z’s sofa bed. It doesn’t look THAT bad, does it?

In the meantime, I’m trying not to focus on the sleep deprivation. Faking it to make it! It’s less exhausting to just go on with the day’s activities than wallow in self pity.

On our way to Basil cooking school this morning

Plan for today was to take a cooking class with Basil cookery. I was impressed with them as they not only accommodated our vegetarian/vegan request but made sure we weren’t cooking with others who were cooking meat and fish, so it was a private class.

The owner and chef Tom had us each pick each of our 6 courses (3 options each). The kids wanted to do 2 desserts instead of a stir fry and he totally rolled with it.

First we headed to the market to get some stuff and he showed us all fresh spices and vegetables. Then we came back and cooked and ATE! Yum! I was nervous, especially about Z using a big butcher knife and cooking alone, but Tom was a pro with kids and both boys enjoyed it a lot. We would highly recommend this place. Taking a cooking class with my kids was definitely as fun and amazing of an experience as I expected, and bonus, they have both now tried Thai food they would otherwise refuse in a restaurant.

My favorite personal part of the experience—making coconut milk from scratch (how amazing!!) and the parang curry that resulted, and learning how to steam sticky rice for the mango sticky rice I’ll make when we return home. It was also interesting to see that most of the food was cooked in a wok, which is not how I cook Thai food at home. I asked the kids if they wanted to take more cooking classes and I was met with an emphatic “yes!” And Z wants to come back to this school, but I think we should try another one as there are so many.
