Chill day yesterday

Given the 2am wake up, we had a pretty chill day yesterday. In the morning, took a cab to the local upscale supermarket that has more “western” products. As much as I had fantasized about eating Thai food every meal, it’s just not happening—my kids don’t want it, I can’t quite cook it yet, and when we eat out in this area at Thai places, it is hard to find vegetarian. It would be different if we were more central to Chiang Mai, but we are in the countryside.

Embracing our “westerness”

The kids and I had fun exploring the small strip mall where the grocery store was and then I made them gnocchi with pesto sauce for lunch, and I saw them relax with food for the first time this trip. Food is so important and food change takes time for people.

On our way out to explore

We then walked in the heat to our afternoon massages, 15 minute away.

This is what our Main Street and town look like

The massage ladies were appalled I made my kids walk in the heat, haha. We all thoroughly enjoyed our massages. Everything here is pricier than I expected but the hour long massages were $5

Next, I took them out to pizza. More smiles

I’ve been thinking about where to travel to and craving the beach. So when the lovely women at the massage parlor suggested that june is better than July to go to Phuket, I started looking at hotels and flights. After wrestling with the internet for 3 hours last night, I finally confirmed flights—for tomorrow!! And then this morning, especially since sleep is still an issue, I booked us a hotel with a kids’ club, a bed and 2 bunk beds, so that maybe we all have sleeping space. Breakfast and dinner also included, so this mama gets a break. It’s kind of fun to spontaneously plan this type of getaway and im grateful we have the time. I had already booked us for tours Thursday and Friday, but they are easy enough to move, and I’ve found that people are just more fluid and easygoing about changing plans outside of the Western works.
